Shoelaces Become Tie Necklace
Tuesday, June 22, 2010

I had the pleasure of meeting Vicky the other day. Vicky, Yvonne and I enjoyed sorting through piles of shoelaces together of many colors, patterns and textures.
Vicky found a pair of shoelaces that inspired her to knot and wear as a tie. She wore her new weave with white pearls (not shown here), and the effect was striking.
It was most enjoyable meeting you, Vicky. Thanks for the inspiration!

A Rainbow of Shoelaces
Wednesday, June 16, 2010
I'm so excited! I've ordered a pair of Simple Shoes, style "Satire Hemp" with ribbon laces.
Simple Shoes are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. I've been a dedicated customer for years.
And although I love the idea of ribbon laces, naturally I will be lacing up with one of my own creations. The shoes are charcoal, so I will likely wear a bright lace with charcoal trim. Show you later....
You may custom-order your own shoelaces by emailing me with your request. Payment can be made by credit card or PayPal on this blog, after we agree on length, pattern, and color(s). Thank You!

These laces, woven on an inkle loom, were created using an arbitrary pick-up technique. The colors are desert camouflage, and a whopping 90" long.

Macrame Name Tag

I noticed this piece attached to a friend's tote bag. He created it years ago. Ray said the pattern represents his last name. It has an air of mystery, probably because I can't read Japanese :)
The entire piece is approximately 4" x 3".

Length Tips
Sunday, June 6, 2010
Here's a helpful tip or two about buying shoelaces when you don't know what length is needed:
Sneakers: I would say that the mid-40 inch range is good for the average sneaker. This length assumes 5 pairs of eyelets... and average spacing, both horizontally and vertically, between eyelets.
High tops: You might get by with mid-50 inch (at my regular price), especially women's high tops. I've noticed also that some people don't bother lacing the top pair of eyelets. Larger shoes using all the eyelets will probably require 60 or 70 inch.
The longer the lace, the greater the chance of error when estimating.
Fear Not! Ian's Shoelace Site offers easy-to-find lacing and tying methods that "lengthen" or "shorten" the laces for aesthetic and practical purposes. [from main menu, select "Lacing Comparison" under the "Lacing Shoes" submenu].
If purchasing new laces, I highly recommend Ian's shoelace calculator--the next best thing to physically measuring in the real world :)

Making Aglets
Saturday, June 5, 2010
I make aglets by clamping the loose ends of the weave with... a clampy thing. Then I stick the clampy thing in the crook of my left knee. Holding the shoelace taut, I begin the bind while holding one end of the shoelace against the weave. My fingers are trained by practice, as opposed to logic, to create the bind. When I'm happy that the bind is long enough, I slip the end of the nylon thru the loop around the clamp... slide the loop off the clamp... use my thumbnail to create a skid... and pull the nylon into the center of the aglet.
Trim.

Sizzle Hot
Friday, June 4, 2010

My latest shoelaces are a delicate Hot Pink woven for a person with a personality to match. I hope she enjoys wearing these laces as much as I enjoyed making them.
This pair was woven with a cotton border for strength, and the remainder is embroidery thread so that the laces are not bulky. Each lace measures 1/4" wide. I think they came out particularly nice; and I suspect I will be using embroidery thread more often.
If you would like a similar pair, please contact me at debrrr at gmail.

Purple Tami

These shoelaces will be sold at a local restaurant, unless you purchase a pair first!
The owner loves purple, and she will have the only purple series of my gourmet shoelaces on the planet.
Who is this mysterious local business owner?
If you feel inclined, puzzle it out.
